There are over 2,100 glaciers on Norway’s Svalbard archipelago. During the summer months, these glaciers melt and calve at a rapid rate, releasing both small and large icebergs into the surrounding waters.
This image was photographed in Lady Franklinfjorden, off Nordaustlandet, the second largest island in the Svalbard archipelago. Glaciers within this region are known for periodic surges, which create a dynamic landscape of fractured ice walls, deep fissures and drifting icebergs. Here, a newly formed iceberg drifts in still conditions, its sculpted surfaces revealing layers of compressed ice and trapped air.
