Barn swallows are one of the most widespread bird species in the world. In the UK, it is estimated that over 700,000 pairs breed during the summer months, having travelled more than 6,000 miles from their wintering grounds in sub-Saharan Africa.
IThis image was photographed along the southern coast of England in late summer, when the birds were feeding intensively in preparation for their return journey. Barn swallows are renowned for their ‘fly-by’ feeding habits as seen in this image, where the adult hovers momentarily to precisely place a morsel of food into the gaping mouth of its chick.
